Winning Text in the Lifetime Achievement Category at the 20th National Exhibition of Chilean Playwriting
Synopsis
Faced with the impossibility of translating another’s pain, a lack of faith in heroic theater, and the challenge of sustaining a romantic relationship without destroying it, *This Could Go On and On and On and On and On* is a close-up look at homosexual intimacy set against the obscene generality of hate speech.
Written by Nicolás Lange, the text is structured as a collage of three LGBTIQ+ love stories inspired by real events: the statements of a gay man who commits suicide in a prison in Puerto Montt, a couple who burn to death in their home in Texas, and a witch who collaborates with the Pinochet dictatorship to track down a group of gay dissidents hiding on Chiloé Island.
About the Project and Our Motivations
It is urgent to combat this growing hate speech with cultural voices that champion resistance, diversity, writing, and queer visibility. On this occasion, the Malala Producciones theater company has decided to take on this artistic, social, and political commitment through a script that combines poetry and a terrible reality in an absolutely flawless way. A script that serves as a reflection of a path we never want to walk again. In Spain, the latest figures are concerning: hate crimes based on sexual orientation or gender identity increased by nearly 70% (Ministry of the Interior, 2022). In countries like Chile, the number of hate crimes has risen by 66% compared to 2021.
The project we propose brings together a team committed to this queer cause—this form of activism through resistance and the visibility of our community. We do not want to see a repeat of situations like those we have recently experienced in Madrid, with banners that incite hatred toward our community and literally illustrate how our rights are being thrown straight into the trash.
